In the 1980's, certain groups suggested
leaving an empty chair at the Seder table as a reminder of the Jews in
Russia and other countries, where celebrating the Festival of Freedom
was not possible ‘behind the Iron Curtain’.
At that time, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn,
encouraged everyone to fill that chair with a ‘fifth child’, a Jew -
young or old, rich or poor, wise or simple - who would otherwise not be
celebrating Passover.
Inspired by this premise, Passover Australia, a non profit organisation run by the Rebbe’s Shluchim to the Rabbinical College of Australia and New Zealand, reaches out to Jews living all over the country, providing them with a means to experience and celebrate Passover.
Aside from the communal Seders (Sedarim), Passover Australia makes sure to assist the Jews in the area, aiding them in their spiritual needs. The Shluchim offer guidance and encouragement in Jewish matters, and provide religious items such as Mezuzot, Tefillin, Kosher food or Jewish paraphernalia etc. where needed.
